Running away from a problem increases the distance to the solution

‘Running away from any problem only increases the distance from the solution’ : a statement from a recent discussion I was part of. So often it feels easier to ‘run’ from or ignore a problem than to face it. That’s when help is needed. So run, but run for help! My experience is that having someone to lean on makes all the difference. The best support is being understood and having your feelings validated. Sometimes advice is helpful but before you can hear any advice, you need to feel safe. Feeling safe comes from knowing you’ve been heard and that it’s ok to feel your feelings.

So the next time you feel like running away, run for help! These days you can run for help without leaving your house – between phone calls, WhatsApp, and Zoom, you can be talking to someone in seconds! Don’t try to push through on your own. It’s not worth the stress, and it just delays finding, if not a solution, a way to manage your situation.

A few weeks ago I wrote about a personal situation in which I had received help that was both practical and emotionally supportive. Much as I valued the practical help, it was the calm presence of a trusted companion who just let me be and silently hugged me at significant moments that stays with me as the greater gift.

So when you feel like running, take a break, go to a favourite feel-good place and slow your breathing till you feel calmer. Think of who you could ask to support you at this time – and sometimes it is a practitioner or therapist, not always a friend or family member – and ASK them! Mostly people feel honoured at being trusted like that – as a practitioner I always feel honoured that a client trusts me to walk with them on part of their life journey.
