What are you thinking?

By Marion Nixon

You may have noticed the sentence next to my name at the end of my emails – You become what you think.  Have you ever thought about what that means?

The you you are today is the product of your past thoughts. If that seems a bit scary, look at the flip side – by changing your thoughts you can change who you are. Do you perhaps know someone who was a happy person, fun to be with, and after a setback became so miserable and negative that you stopped enjoying their company and perhaps someone else that in spite of difficult circumstances is always cheerful and a pleasure to be with?

Those two people have different mindsets, different thought patterns. The way they think about life and themselves determines how they experience life. If you look for the good things in life, even in difficult times, you will find them. If you are focused on the things you don’t like, that’s all you will see… I’m not advocating a Polyanna mentality that glosses over the hard and painful things. Those things need to be acknowledged as well as the feelings that go with them. Just don’t get stuck there!

A good place to start is a gratitude list – find 3-5 things every day for which you can feel grateful. They can be seemingly small things – easy access to water-  or something that feels bigger, like a kind gesture.

Research shows that changing the neural pathway of chronic pain reduces its intensity – the same happens with thoughts. Break your habitual thought pattern, and you will see things differently.

A favourite saying of mine from Wayne Dyer is, when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

I’ve done a lot of work on changing my mindset, and helping others to do so too. It’s so much easier to do when you work with a trained guide.  Call me.
