Kindness is like snow

Do it like this.
I don’t think you should do that.
Try doing it this way.

If you’re like me, just reading those statements send little shock waves through my nervous system. I even start hearing them, not just reading them. Why? Because they trigger my childhood memories of not being heard.

Being heard validates you and makes you open to options. Someone jumping in with unsolicited advice closes you down. You see it in children when their bodies curl in on themselves as they close down. Adults do the same, but sometimes manage to keep their body language more subtle.

Frequently being told how to do things, or how to fix things destroys relationships because it makes the other person feel worthless and useless. Nothing they do is ever right or good enough so after a while they stop doing anything…

Somehow we get programmed to always want to fix things, correct things, or one up the other person by telling our stories instead of validating the other person’s one. It’s a hard habit to break. Listening with empathy is such a valuable gift to give someone. Try it – affirm the other person’s experience and empathise with their emotions without offering any advice, solutions, or stories unless they ask for help.  Their trust in you will grow and your relationship will flourish.

Try doing the same with yourself – instead of putting yourself down, acknowledge that you are always doing the best you can in that moment. Offer yourself compassionate understanding, and you’ll be amazed at the difference that makes in your life.

The first step to that is to change your Inner Critic into a Supportive Fan. How? My ebook tells you how. Download it here.
