What if…?

I had an interesting insight this week when I was preparing a talk on turning your Inner Critic into a Supportive Fan. I usually describe the Inner Critic as a misguided friend giving advice from out of date information – instructions intended to keep you safe when you were a small child - which has no relevance to adulthood. My new insight is that the Inner Critic plays the role of devil’s advocate!

A devil’s advocate is a person who in order to support a project or point of view, will argue against it to show up any weaknesses that need to be remedied – a kind of ‘what if’ worst case scenario person but with good intent!

How often does your inner voice say things like ‘what if this goes wrong’ or ‘what if that doesn’t happen’, ‘what if you’re not good enough’? Well, what if your inner voice wants you to be prepared for such eventualities and isn’t intending to put you down?

That puts a different spin on things - though I still think the inner voice needs to upgrade its communication skills!

The next time your Inner Critic puts you down, imagine it is a person, and have a conversation with it. Find out what its intention is – most often it’s to keep you safe from making a mistake or being hurt – and tell it how you would like it do that differently. You may need to have the conversation several times, but you can teach it to give you supportive messages instead of making you feel bad. My free ebook Turn Your Inner Critic into a Supportive Fan tells you how.
