What is your biggest distraction?

Do you stick to plans or meander around them, procrastinating on taking the key step till the last minute?

I used to wonder why we do some tasks willingly, some with enthusiasm, and others only on ‘pain of death’. The answer lies in your values. Values motivate you, literally move you.  They are emotional states that you desire, feelings you want to have because you connect them with being successful, feeling fulfilled

Your values originate in your beliefs, the emotional states you desire (often because you lacked them as a child) and the emotional states you want to avoid. Your desired values and avoidant values work together. For example, if you have love as a high value, avoiding rejection is probably also high and may be blocking your ability to receive love.

So what’s this got to do with procrastination? The task you are putting off may be linked to an avoidant value and the prospect of doing it is making you feel uncomfortable or anxious.

I find the best way to deal with procrastination is to find the core of the problem rather than focus on overcoming the distractions. When the core anxiety or uncertainty is resolved, and you've tapped into your motivation for achieving your desired outcome, working to plan is much easier. And with the right tools, all this is easy to do.

It can be fun to recognise your  'go to' distractor when procrastination strikes. Mine was laundry. Doing the laundry made me feel good and productive, until I recognised that it was just a calming distraction from doing things that made me feel anxious.
