How adaptable are you?

By Marion Nixon

July 11, 2023

It’s winter here in South Africa, and I’m realizing just how mild the last few have been… now we’re back to the ‘real’ Cape Town winter, except in the past I worked in a heated office and now I’m working from home without aircon!

This has got me thinking about adaptability. A recent meme I saw suggested that it isn’t the fittest that survive, but the most adaptable. (I suspect that’s what Darwin meant - fit can also mean suited to the task / circumstance). We adapt to seasonal changes, we adapt to living in different places – sometimes places with different climates and languages, we adapt to different stages of life. Humans are very adaptable!

And sometimes we struggle to adapt  … What is the most difficult adaptation you have had to make – or are making?

The key to adapting seems to be acceptance. When you resist and complain about something your focus is on that and you don’t see the good things that could lift your spirits, or make life easier. Acceptance doesn’t mean do nothing. On the contrary, when you accept your situation you have a clearer picture of what opportunities it offers and how you can use them to improve your circumstances.

What has been your biggest adaptation? I’ve had a number of life changes and I’m  not sure what the biggest one has been… probably becoming self-employed after having the security of a salary for several decades.

Looking back I realise how many times I’ve adapted, and to many different things… Adapting can be very difficult, and accepting a situation that makes you very unhappy can seem impossible, so let me help you. Struggling makes life hard. Give yourself a break and let me support you through the process of adapting so you can live a happier life on the other side.  Call me.
