Forest bathing is good for stress

Walking through the forest I became aware that this was more than a pleasurable experience, it was fulfilling one of my highest values – being quiet in nature, especially among trees. I totally get the Japanese concept of forest bathing to recover from stress. I’ve been doing it for years without knowing it had a name!

I then started looking for other high values in my life that I hadn’t recognised as such and was surprised to discover that nearly all the personal pleasures that I value as restorative of balance and use to destress, have consistently been relegated to the ‘nooks and crannies’ of my life – I was fitting them in where there was a gap. Consequently I lived with a nagging guilt whenever I took time for myself that there was always something more important I should be doing.

Now I prioritise my personal pleasure and allocate time for specific activites. If I have to do something else in that time, I reschedule ‘my time’ to another time slot. Prioritising the activities that restore my well-being has made a noticeable difference to the quality of my life as I can fully enter into enjoying what I’m doing - I have silenced that guilt inducing inner voice.

The quality of my work has improved too, as I come to it mentally and emotionally refreshed, feeling good about myself and life, and so able to think more clearly and creatively. I have more stamina, more resilience, more patience, more everything!

All work and no (or guilty) play is a recipe for a dull life, dull work, a dull you.
