Who’s got your back?

What kind of support circle do you have?

Having support takes a huge amount of stress off you. Having someone to talk to can uplift you, let some of the emotional stress out, and most importantly, let you know that you’re not alone. And the bonus, someone you know may be able to help you, or they may know someone who can.

I’ve recently had several techy issues to deal with, and when I talked about them a cousin offered to fix one issue, and helped me with part of another, and a friend added some more help. My insurance broker is an angel in disguise and is dealing with the rest of that issue, and a company employee went out of her way to help me with the third. There’s an amazing amount of help available if you are open to receiving it.

Among my clients I have found people who feel unsupported often expect too much from the people they want to support them. It’s not always the people we expect to help us that do so. Different people fulfill different roles in your life. Recognising this helps you ‘spread the load’ by turning to different people for different kinds of support.

Rather than having a general expectation that family and friends will give you the support you need, choose a small group of people you can trust and know will be supportive when you need to be heard and encouraged. Look beyond immediate family and friends to your extended family, business friends, and professionals like a coach, or a mentor.  For example, three coaches I’ve met through networking groups have become part of my support group.

Whether your support system is formal or informal, it is important that you have personal support, both for practical advice, and for your emotional and mental well-being. Without support you are at risk of burnout or stress related health issues.

If you need support, call me. Don’t let your inner critic put you off. Call me.
