May you be …

I recently heard a talk on the 3 states that enable you to stay positive when dealing with difficult people:
hope, gratitude, and compassion.

Because compassion is at the heart of my work, I’ll discuss it first and gratitude and hope in future blogs.

Compassion is significant because it leads to understanding instead of judgement. When you stop judging others, they become less defensive and easier to be with!

The other side of judgement is that what you judge in others often reflects what you judge in yourself. For example, if you criticise someone for being a couch potato, look at your own life and see where you’re ‘on a couch’ opting out of taking action. Or are you driving yourself more than necessary for fear of being seen as a not-good-enough slouch? Need help with this? Call me.

An easy way to shift your mindset from judgement to compassion is this:

Sit quietly and become aware of yourself. Say to your inner being,
May you be happy,
May you be healthy
May you be safe
May you be at peace.
Repeat until your feel at peace with yourself.
Then focus on someone you care about and repeat the blessing for them.
Repeat the exercise for someone you don’t know very well

and lastly, for someone who triggers a negative response in you.

Done daily this will gradually create new connections in your brain and enable you to be more compassionate towards others. When you meet the person/s who trigger your judgment, your response will be calmer and more compassionate.

In any difficult situation you cannot change how others behave, you can only change how you respond to them. The magic is, that gives others space to behave differently too.

If this isn’t so easy to do, call me.

May you be at peace.
