Hope lets the light in.

The 3 states that enable you to cope with stressful situations are hope, gratitude, and compassion. Today I write about hope. Compassion and gratitude are the previous 2 blogs.

Hope is belief that things can be better and is focused on future expectation. It helps maintain mental stability in stressful times as it keeps you believing you will cope and survive the experience. Hope brings better health and well-being, more resilience and purpose, and less anxiety and depression. It lets the light in.

Richard Snyder’s research shows 3 main components of hope: clear goals; adaptable progress; self-belief/agency.

1. Having goals to hope for: meaningful goals are motivated by your personal values. Make sure you know your own values and aren’t living out other people’s goals. What goals fulfill your values?

2. Multiple pathways to your goal: achieving an important goal is not a straight line. It takes time and changing routes along the way. Perseverance, flexibility, and creativity are key to progress.

3. Self-belief: unwavering belief you can achieve your goal makes perseverance worthwhile. Your self-talk is critical - if you say you can or you say you can’t, you’re right! Call me if you struggle with this.

To build hope:
1. List all the areas of your life: health, relationships, work, hobbies, sport, self-care, etc.
For 2 weeks pick one topic per day and for 10mins write about the best possible self you want to be in that part of your life in 5 years. What do you want to achieve? Who do you want to become? Where will you be?
2. Look back at challenges you have overcome. Who were you then, and who did you become? Draw on that past strength for the present and future. Listen to your self-talk and turn I can’t into I can call me for help.
3. Begin! Hope thrives on progress so each day look for small steps you can take to move forward. Focus on what you can do to make a difference to your life. Need a guide? Call me.

You can learn to nurture hope. Call me for help.
