What are Your 3 things?

When you hear about practising gratitude, do you think, ‘ho hum’ (or something less polite)?  I get it. Gratitude is often touted as a panacea to life’s problems by people who don’t seem to be fully present in this life.

The interesting thing is, the research done on the effect of having the proverbial ‘attitude of gratitude’ shows that real gratitude has amazing mental, emotional, and even physical, health benefits. So it’s worth giving it a try!

You can learn to practise gratitude. Like any learning, repetition is the key: the more you look for things to be grateful for, the more you will find!

A good place to start is to daily write down

3 things, any things, you can be grateful
3 things about today for which you can be grateful
3 things you like about yourself.

When you have low moments, grab a pen and paper, any scrap of paper, and write down 3 things you for which you can be grateful. Doing that in the moment will help shift your energy and stop the downward spiral of negative thoughts.

I also get that there are times when you may feel there is nothing to be grateful for … The best way to deal with this is to go further into the darkness. (Sounds odd doesn’t it!) Think of something in your life that matters to you – eg a relationship, an object, big or small, or the use of both your legs or eyes – and imagine how you’d feel without that. Then come back to being aware you do have that in your life, and feel your gratitude for it.

If you’d like support getting out of a dark place, call me.

A fun way to develop your ‘gratitude muscle’ is a gratitude jar: every day write down 3 things you are grateful for and put the notes in a jar.  Post-it notes make it colourful too. On low days read some as a reminder of the good things in your life.

May your gratitude jar be big and very full! If it isn’t, call me.
